The Cloister of Sant'Agostino, located inside the homonymous complex consisting of the Church and the former convent, now deconsecrated, is a truly magical and suggestive place, within which numerous cultural events are organized such as exhibitions, concerts , meetings and interviews, especially during the summer season.
The church of Sant’Agostino was built in the fourteenth century for the Augustinian friars and about two centuries later the relative convent was also built. Inside this stands the beautiful cloister, a porticoed courtyard surrounded by magnificent marble columns, the perimeter of which was once completely frescoed with depictions of the life of the Saint who gave the structure its name. The author of the frescoes was Astolfo Petrazzi from Siena, a painter of the Baroque period active mainly in Siena, Rome and Spoleto; in the cloister today only the frescoes of eight lunettes remain, although the building has been partially restored that allowed the active use of this splendid location.
The Cloister, in addition to being the seat of the Giosuè Carducci Municipal Library, the Museum of Sketches and the L. Russo Cultural Center, has established itself over the years as a center for promoting cultural events. This year, in addition to the famous "Pietrasanta In Concerto" review, the international chamber music festival conceived and directed by Michael Guttman, the Cloister will host two important meetings with leading authors of contemporary Italian literature who will present their newly released books. The presentation of the books will take place in collaboration with the Municipal Library and the Nina Library, this year the guests will be the two writers Giampaolo Simi and Chiara Tagliaferri.
The first event will be held on Friday 15 July, at 9.30 pm, in which the novel "Without saying goodbye" by Giampaolo Simi, published by Sellerio, will be presented to the public. Italian writer, screenwriter and journalist, Giampaolo Simi, originally from Viareggio, gained popularity by publishing three novels in the “La Memoria” series for Sellerio Editore, inaugurated in 1979 and later becoming the most famous and widespread of the publishing house. Over the years Simi has collected numerous literary prizes, including the prestigious Nino Savarese prize with the novel “The darkness under the candle”.
The novel that will be presented on the occasion is the third in a saga that narrates the investigations carried out by the journalist Dario Corbo: "a melancholy character but able to smell crime, a well thought out plot, a constant suspense tempered by a subtle vein ironic. With these ingredients Giampaolo Simi confirms himself as a master of the genre and signs a third piece of the series that can be read in taste even alone ".
The second event will be held on Thursday 21 July, again at 9.30 pm, and will feature Chiara Tagliaferri, author originally from Piacenza, who will present her first novel “Strega commands color” published by Mondadori. Also for Mondadori, Tagliaferri has published "Stories of girls your mother would not approve of" and "Morgana - I am the rich man", taken from the podcast of the same name that tell stories of women who have changed the course of history. The author has worked for years at various radio broadcasts for Radio Rai 2 and has now decided to devote herself to writing: the novel "Stega commands color" is set in the Lower Po Valley, in a forgotten province, where a cruel grandmother exercises a destructive power towards her family: “The sound of a fiery debut with the changing colors of wickedness, for which Chiara Tagliaferri has an absolute pitch. And her literary talent to reproduce it through memorable female characters: grandmother, mother, sister, herself. Witch commands color is a novel that sabotages hypocrisy, it is the story of a girl who opposes the curse that her life has thrown at her. "
